VICAR'S LETTER

17 Sundon Road
Streatley

March, 2006

Dear All

Throughout his ministry, Jesus strove to drive back the darkness of this world. This Lent we have three opportunities to do the same.

Two of these opportunities are provided by the Lent Appeals being organised by the Care Committee. They are trying, first, to raise funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute. The value of the work of this institution is known to all, but now they have a specific need. Their boats are being equipped with new and more precise navigation systems, but these systems will be of no help until the crews can be trained to use them. The money we raise will go towards the cost of this training.

The Care Committee are also trying to raise funds for Kids Out. This is a national charity but one based locally, in Leighton Buzzard. It provides breaks and holidays for disadvantaged and special needs children. It casts its net widely, taking in both the mentally and physically disadvantaged and also, for example, children who are carers and sometimes in desperate need of a break from the responsibilities that life has placed upon them.

the third opportunity for driving back the darkness comes from a more unlikely source. It comes from the Sunday Club. You will have read in the January issue that Trudi Chandler is running in the London Marathon to raise funds for Kidney Research. (Her son, Connor, suffers from chronic kidney disease.) The Sunday Club (Heaven help her) have decided that they would like to assist. Thankfully, they are not planning to assist her in the Marathon itself. Instead they propose to raise funds with a Murder/Mystery evening. Guests will be sumptuously fed and invited to solve a Murder Mystery (probably why the Leaders haven't murdered the members long ago.) All profits will be forwarded to Trudi. The date is fixed - March 19. All other details when available.

For forty days from Christmas to Candlemas we celebrated the coming of the Light of the World. Now we try to do as he did and to push back the darkness of the world. Please give whatever support you can to these efforts.

All best wishes,

Roger.
