VICAR'S LETTER

17 Sundon Road
Streatley

January, 2007

Dear All

Many of us have been coming to church for a long time. As a result we have forgotten what it was like to cross the threshold for the first time. I asked a more recent member of the congregation to jot down the things that worried them. The list went as follows:

  • What would be the correct clothing to wear?
  • Is there a special place where I should sit?
  • At what point should I stop talking before and after the service?
  • Do I remain in my chair or kneel during prayer?
  • How and what should I give during collection?
  • When do I know it's my turn to go up to receive communion / blessing?
  • Do I stand or kneel when I get there?
  • Is any response needed?
  • After the service has finished, when do I leave?
  • What type of person goes to church?
  • If I went to church, would I have to attend every Sunday?

Once over the threshold, of course, another string of worries comes into play? What are these books?

  • What is this paper?
  • Which is used when?

There was a time when we had a team of pew wardens to help with just such problems. Their job was to identify newcomers in their part of the church, to welcome them, and to give them whatever assistance they might need. Perhaps the time has come to re-awaken that system. Beware Vicar approaching with intent. It might be you.

All best wishes, and a Happy New Year,

Roger
