Ladies' Guild Meeting - December 2008 Cold
and frosty was the night when we arrived by car. Armed
with our gifts we wandered in to take a seat
At
tables set in splendid red with silver crackers
Neatly
set neath candles, ruby wine, flaming like advent rings.
The
hall glowed with Christmas warmth, the tables set with party food Mouth
watering at the sight, led to a meal to celebrate The
festive season’s start, the first of many probably. We
filled quiz sheets to win a prize (if memories were sharp.) Twelve
jolly days of Christmas were sung, not by celestial choirs, But
by our brave committee who had prepared the meal. They
made us laugh with solos sung, with somewhat dulcet tones. Dressed
all in red to celebrate: we thought they excelled as cooks.
Now
came time to catch our breath and sit in awed delight. We
had our entertainer there, Paul is his name, a jolly soul Who
crossed the county border from Hitchin, set on the Hiz To
chat and laugh, tell us tall tales, while working magic tricks.
His
skill with cards was magical, coloured hankies twirled and joined. Rope
tricks with scissors he displayed, balloons to creatures were contrived, Part
of his many skills, while chatting happily to make us call in disbelief. Lastly
he conjured up a rabbit, Archie, to enchant the ladies in the hall. Late
to the stage with pianist’s hat, came Marion to play Our
final carols for the night, she had had a busy day, So
tossed her music fast aside with casual arm fling, While
we sang with glee then wandered home with happy hearts. With
thanks: To
the ladies who worked to make a special evening To
our vicar who found his water pistol from a cracker quite irresistible To
all who made the evening a pleasure And
for all our gifts.
